Steps to Smarter Learning
Juggling four different subjects all at once is no easy feat, especially if your child has just started Primary School education. As such, being able to make sure that your child is able to ease into the learning curve is of utmost importance. Here are certain tips that parents are able to impart to their children in order to foster more effective learning:
1. Cultivate Good Reading Habits
Reading is one of the most basic yet valuable skills required for any level of education, be it primary or secondary. Ensuring that your child is able to understand texts is akin to being a step closer to them acing their examinations. Reading with understanding lays down the groundwork and foundation for grasping the various concepts required in school.
The healthy habit of reading can be broken in by reading together with your child for a short time every night. Progressively, visiting the library on weekends and encouraging children to pick out books that they think they would enjoy for leisure reading is also another way to cultivate this habit. Subsequently, parents may also look out for educational magazines such as National Geographic Kids or Reader’s Digest to help boost reading capabilities.
2. Practice Writing
Being able to write well and to write for long periods of time is a skill that will help children as they sit for examinations. Apart from Creative Writing as part of the English curriculum in Primary Schools, students will have to sit for minimally hour-long written examinations for all other subjects as well. It is therefore important to train a child’s ability to write clearly, neatly and quickly so that they are able to save time on this aspect and prevent careless mistakes. Get your child to practice by teaching them how to write the alphabet and allow them to practice writing simple words. Ensure that the understand how much space to leave between words, and that they are able to clearly differentiate between all numbers and letters so that they are not easily confused by them.
3. Breaking it Down
Teach your child how to break down topics into smaller components so that they are able to better digest the content that they are learning. Allow them to learn things by parts, and once they have it all down, summarize the content for them and revise through all of it only after they are able to understand and grasp each part of the topic. Another creative way to help them learn is to make use of acronyms for things that they need to memorize. Coming up with a catchy phrase of memorable statement will help them learn and remember better!
While these tips help your children to ease into learning and give them the right tools to handle Singapore’s education curriculum better, they may sometimes require extra help. YMCA Learning Centre is happy to offer both primary tuition and secondary tuition for your children!
