How to be a Mathelete

We see numbers in our everyday lives and they are just important as the language we use to communicate. Used in measurement, finance and even to tell the date and time, Mathematics is part of every child’s syllabus at school. However, there is no doubt that sometimes, understanding and scoring well in this subject can be difficult. Check out some of our tips that can help your child improve their mathematics!

1. Understanding Problem Sums

Learning to understand what the question is asking for is pertinent to scoring well. Some ways that can help your child improve understanding the various problems sums are to go through a couple with them to better gauge their understanding. Better still, draw out scenarios with your child to help them grasp the question better. By making use of narratives and imagination, this could make learning Mathematics much more interesting!

Another way to help them understand addition, subtraction, multiplication and division can be done through using different props. Make use of everyday household items such as utensils, marbles and perhaps even their soft toys to keep them engaged!

2. Eliminating Careless Mistakes

With many numbers and variables present in Mathematics questions, children may sometimes be prone to careless mistakes while trying to solve the question. Therefore, it is important to make sure that while studying and solving Mathematical questions, children have a keen sense of detail when dealing with the numbers. One way to eliminate careless mistakes to ensure that a child has good handwriting. Numerals can often be read wrongly, for example, the numbers ‘1’ and ‘7’ can often be misread if not written properly. Another good studying habit to instill is to get your child to double check their answers after finishing the assignment.

3. Topical Practice

To fully grasp Mathematical concepts, it would be important to have topical practice so that your child is able to familiarize him or herself with the relevant topics that are part of the school syllabus. Repetition and practice is key. As such, it is effective to introduce the topics one by one to your child, and to ensure that they go through each concept thoroughly when learning.

While these tips are essential to education in Mathematics, YMCA offers both primary and secondary tuition that can further help your child be well on their way to becoming a Mathelete!
